What I enjoy most about gardening is weaving my plant friends into the fabric of my life. I don't need to hang a calendar up on the wall; my "calendar" is out in the yard. Snowdrops presage spring, hydrangeas herald summer, New England asters usher in autumn. When this grand parade ceases for another year, it's winter. Need I know more?

I know that to everything there is a season, but I'm a gardener and I start counting the days until spring the day after Christmas. I LOVE to dig in the dirt ... dirt has an almost magical effect on me.I LOVE roses and get completely giddy when it is time for my historical roses to bloom in early June.

Gardening is great because it gets me outdoors to enjoy the beauties of nature and to observe the changes of seasons. And it makes me exercise even when I don't want to because I know i have to bend down and pull weeds -- or else! :-) I love the abundance of flowers I can grow almost year-round and the opportunity to eat the freshest (and most pesticide-free) veggies available. And I especially appreciate being able to look ahead with hope and anticipation to what the coming months (and years) will bring to my landscape and garden.

What I love about gardening are the wtf? moments. Finding that my lamium 'Beacon Silver' has reverted to its white form. Shaking my head at the forsythia that blooms twice a year. Wondering where on earth that volunteer campanula came from or why I can grow lavender when none of my neighbors can. Marveling at the bizarre reproductive habits of my aquilegias, or the contentedness with which my nigella seeds itself into patches of full shade. Plants don't like to follow the rules in my garden, and it's made me into a misfit gardener. I do things I shouldn't, I commit dreadful sins of omission, and I still enjoy four seasons of beauty in my renegade garden.

I love the anticipation of seeing my daylily & iris seedlings open for the first time. Since I started hybridizing the garden gives me that "Christmas morning" feeling every day from May-August. It is awesome to look at a flower and know that nobody in the whole world has ever seen a bloom exactly like that one before- it's my own, my very special beauty, made just so that I can have that joy and I get to evaluate it & decide if it should be introduced to other gardeners.

Gardening in containers gives so many chances to get it right. I love the mix of methodically planning out things from seeds and then picking up an unexpected $4.99 lavender plant at Trader Joe's.

I tell friends who want to start but haven't, "Buy a few seedlings at the farmer's market or local hardware store/garden center, ask the person who sold it to you what to do with it and go for it. Worst case, you toss what died and plant something else."

I love going out to the garden in the morning, a cup of coffee in my hand, to see what's new, what's grown, what can be harvested. Each day brings a new delight, a new challenge and a new satisfaction. Watching something grow from seed into something that sustains your family is so satisfying.

And, I love promoting and teaching others about the joys of a no-till, lasagna garden. It provides an opportunity to garden for those who otherwise might not have the soil or the space to garden traditionally. Bumper crops in a small space with little effort is a pretty attractive scenario for both seasoned gardeners like myself -- and those that want to start.

People with a passion for gardens, plants, nature etc tend to be very interested to learn and change their habits if need be. Since 2004 I have been teaching horticulture which is my new love to be honest as there is nothing as exciting as watching people grow (apart from plants that is!) <3
