Regarding biochar on #gardenchat, 1/9/12-I'd heard of the discovery in the Amazon regarding apparent use of charcoal in the soil. My questions concerned feasibility and cost recovery of adding enough to large fields and how long this would take to pay out. Thanks to the moderator and guest hosts for an interesting session! - Bill

I thought it was a very interesting discussion tonight. As someone who has made biochar in homemade kit, I am very interested (and wary) in seeing how biochar will evolve as a commercial product. But there are many great benefits to using biochar, so thank you for spreading the word!

I learned biochar is something I could use to help break up my heavy clay soil. I need to try a variety of things this Spring to work on my backyard.

Was a new and interesting topic tonight about Biochar and it's benefits to ammending garden soil, and how it's a permanent ammendment, not a temporary soil fix, and that it corrects/adjusts soil PH as well as helps retain moisture. Connected with new poster @kwolchak from NJ tonight.

I've been researching biochar for the last couple of months and am excited to test it out in my organic vegetable gardens. It seems like a simple and practical method to improve the soil and increase yields. I'm always inspired by the great contributors to GardenChat and have incorporated many ideas that I've been introduced to during our weekly chats. Thanks for hosting this week's learning session!

Wow! So much great info about biochar on #gardenchat this evening. Love learning new/old ways to amend soil, particularly acidic soil which is my problem. Looking forward to mixing it in with my existing soil and some additional compost. Lots of new friends were made tonight!
